History: Ryu was an orphaned child, with no knowledge of who his parents were or if they are still alive. When Ryu was a young child, he was adopted by a man named Gouken and began living with him as well as learning the mysterious and dangerous martial art known as Nin-Ansatsuken. Gouken would later get the bratty son of his best friend, Ken Masters, not only as a sparring partner for Ryu, but to also give Ryu some company since Gouken was the only person Ryu had seen in a long time due to the seclusion of Gouken's dojo.
Ryu looked up to Gouken as a father figure during his early years and Ken as a best friend and surrogate brother, which is how their relationship remains to this day. When Ryu was about 18 years old, Gouken thought that Ryu was ready to travel the world in order to test his skills against the best fighters in the world. With this, Ryu left Gouken and Ken, and headed to fight in the first World Warrior tournament. Along the way, he ran into Guy, and formed a friendship with him.
Ryu is one of the participants of the World Warrior tournament. After defeating all challengers, his skills earn him the right to fight its host, Sagat. Sagat nearly beats Ryu into unconsciousness. So sure is he that he had won the fight that he offers the reeling Ryu a hand to his feet. Ryu, however, having such a strong desire to win, allows himself to be engulfed by the Satsui no Hadou and he strikes Sagat with a nearly-fatal Metsu Shoryuken that not only knocks Sagat unconscious but also marks his chest with a great scar. After regaining consciousness and discovering what had happened, Sagat swears vengeance on Ryu.
Ryu leaves Sagat behind and returns to his home only to find that Gouken, his master and adoptive father, has been murdered. Learning that Akuma had fought and killed his adopted father, Ryu began to travel the world to find this man. Along the way, he came across a Chinese woman by the name of Chun-Li, who thought he was a criminal. She tried to arrest him, but he was able to beat her without striking her. She soon realized her mistake, and let him go about his business.
He encounters and fights Akuma on a secluded island known as Gokuentou, but Akuma was only testing him. He senses that Ryu has the same powers as he does, and tells Ryu about the Satsui no Hadou - a power that consumes the practitioners of their shared fighting style, driving them to win even when it means killing the opponent. Ryu refuses to unleash this power within, and Akuma uses his fist to smash the island, leaving Ryu stranded.
After escaping the island, Ryu battles Ken and loses. Ken realizes Ryu is not himself and has been deeply troubled since his last victory over Sagat. He gives him his red hair band as a reminder to stay focused, which Ryu was sincerely grateful for. Soon thereafter, a fan of his, named Sakura, comes up and expresses her desire to train under him. Ryu replies that he himself still has much to learn, but allows Sakura to take a picture of him. She swears to make him accept her eventually.
Ryu continues to be troubled by what Akuma had told him, compounded by his encounter with Rose, who has intricate ties to M. Bison. She tells him that he cannot defeat Bison unless he fights him at the cost of his soul. True to form, when Ryu confronts Bison, he is defeated despite putting up a valiant fight. Bison takes the semi-conscious Ryu and begins brainwashing him, using the revelation that the Satsui no Hadou - the dark power Ryu struggles to avoid using - is akin to Bison's own Psycho Power.
The brainwashing is interrupted by the entrance of Sagat, Ken, and Sakura, each of them having followed Ryu for their own reasons. While Ken and Sakura distract Bison, Sagat challenges the brainwashed Ryu. Sagat quickly notices the effects Bison's brainwashing have had on Ryu, and, at Sagat's urging, Ryu comes to his senses and helps Ken and Sakura force Bison to retreat.
However, Bison returns and attacks Ryu when he is all alone. Bison does this because his body is being pushed past it's limits due to it's power. The battle that follows proves to be the last for Bison in his original body, as Ryu is quickly overwhelmed by Bison's awesome powers. He falls under the force of a Psycho Shot, and Bison attempts to take over Ryu's body.
Bison is able to being to enter Ryu's body, as the Satsui no Hadou tries to activate, and take over Ryu. In his mind, Ryu sees flashes of those that are close to him and care for him. He remembers Sakura wanting him to train her, Sagat wishing for a rematch, Rose warning him about this moment, Guy laughing after a sparring match, Ken telling him that they had a score to settle.
The last memory, one of Chun-Li smiling, was able to awaken Ryu, and suppress the Satsui no Hadou, allowing Ryu to force Bison back into his own body. Ryu then charges up his Shinku Hadou-Ken, and unleashes it at Bison. The attack does critical damage, and Ryu finishes the fight with a Shin Shoryu Ken, which causes Bison's body to explode from the power trapped within. Ryu is caught in the explosion, and rendered unconscious, buried under the remains of the area he fought Bison.
Ryu awoke in a military hospital, his body heavily damaged from the battle and resulting explosion. He forced himself up to a sitting position and looked around. He could hear voices outside the door. He noticed his duffle bag next to a chair. He tried to get to his feet, keeping his eye on the door. He ripped the IV out of his arm, put on his headband, and slowly moved toward the door, thinking he had been captured by Bison while he was unconscious.
He slowly opened the door, and punched out the guard that turned to look. He swiftly took down the other guard with a swift kick to the jaw. He made his way down the hall, and out into the main courtyard. There, he came across Guile, who had been in a bad mood for some reason. Not realizing that Ryu was the one that had killed Bison, Guile attacked Ryu, thinking he was an intruder. Ryu was weak from his injuries, but was able to hold his own. He began to charge up a Shakunetsu Hadou-Ken, while Guile prepared to unleash a Sonic Boom. They were stopped as a Sonic Boom flew between the two of them. Ryu fell unconscious once more.
When Ryu awoke again, Charlie was leaning against the wall, half asleep. Ryu wanted to know where he was, and Charlie told him that he had been found in the remains of an explosion, buried under rocks and trees. Charlie had been on his way to bomb Bison and his HQ, but that mission was called off by his superiors, as an officer had found that Bison had completely vanished from the face of the earth. Charlie set down to investigate, and found Ryu. He brought him back to the base for medical treatment.
Ryu asked if Charlie had stopped the fight between him and Guile, and Charlie admitted to it. He told Ryu that he did it because one of the officers did not want to see him injured. He made mention that the officer was female, and that he had met her once before. Ryu spent the next few months recovering, and was visited by many members of the armed forces, most of which wanted to see the man that had beaten Bison. He was also visited often by Ken, as well as Chun-Li, whom he grew fond of.
One day, Ken, Chun-Li, Charlie, and Guile were on their way to visit Ryu. Ken opened the door, and let out a sigh. The others looked in, and found Ryu gone, along with his bag. All that was left was a note which thanked all those that tended to his injuries, and made mention of an interest in fighting Charlie and Guile, as well as seeing Chun-Li again.
Ryu returned to his master's dojo in japan, where he found an old man paying respects to Gouken. Ryu kneels before the alter, and also pays his respects. After a few moments of silence, both men stand, and Ryu speaks to old man. He motions for Ryu to follow him, and they enter the dojo. They then speak at length about Gouken, Akuma, and the Satsui no Hadou, as well as the Goutetsu-style Ansatsuken. The old man, who reveals himself to be Gen, leaves, making mention of a dangerous cult looking for powerful warriors, as well as Bison being alive.
Ryu decides to head out and locate this Cult, worried that his friends may be in danger. He travels to India, where he comes across a young man named Cody, who had escaped from prison. He tries to stop Cody, as he is a wanted criminal. The two begin to fight, and they are an even match. Cody gets serious, and takes off his handcuffs. This leads to the fight falling to his favor for a short while, until Ryu gets serious. They battle back and forth for over and hour, until Guy shows up, looking for Cody. The distraction allows Cody to get away, taking Ryu's money with him.
Left without any money, Ryu is stuck in India. Guy suggests he try out for a money that is being filmed, as they are in need of a stunt double for the main villain. Against his better judgment, Ryu agrees, and goes with Guy to the movie set. Ryu gets the part because of his build, with the producers not awake that he is a skilled fighter.
The star of the movie, Fei Long, thinks Ryu is just a meat head. During the first fight scene, Ryu counters an attack by Fei Long on instinct, and the two begin to fight for real. Fei Long hits Ryu with his rising spin kick, knocking Ryu onto his shoulders. As Fei Long is coming down, Ryu presses off his shoulders, and unleashes a Shoryu Ken, which knocks out Fei Long. The movie is shut down due to the injuries Fei Long received. Impressed, Fei Long gives Ryu a large sum of money as payment for a good fight. Guy goes with Ryu back to America.
Ryu makes his way back to the Military Base that had taken care of him, and finds it under attack. Ryu rushes to help, and finds Charlie and Guile fighting off Shadowloo warriors. He aids them with a Shinkuu Hadou-Ken, and then heads over to talk to them. Charlie informs Ryu that Chun-Li has been kidnapped, and points him in the direction he needs to go. Guile stays behind to cover their back.
Ryu and Charlie arrive at the helipad, where they see the newly reborn Bison taking Ken onto a transport jet, while Juli is taking Chun-Li aboard. Ryu and Charlie run to stop them, but are cut off by Poison and Juni. Poison attacks Ryu, ramming him back to the edge of the helipad. She keeps him from falling, and asks him in a whisper to fight back against her, to keep her cover from being blown. Ryu agrees, and fights with her, while Charlie is fighting Juni and Juli. The dolls hit Charlie with duel Cannon Spikes, knocking him over the edge. Ryu catches his arm, and pulls him back up. It is too late to stop Bison, who leaves with Ken and Chun-Li.
Ryu takes off on his own to find Bison, while the armed forces go about their way. Ryu stops by Eliza's place, but stops himself from knocking on the door, not wanting to upset her. He leaves, and makes his way for Bison. He is stopped by a very old man along the way, who challenges him to a fight. This man tells him that if he can land a blow against the old man, he would inform him of where his friends were.
Ryu fights with all he has, using every last ounce of his power to try and hit the old man. However, he is unable to land a blow. He has a chance when the man is blinded by a glare, but Ryu does not take it. He tries his most powerful moves, but they have no effect. Finally, completely exhausted, Ryu launches a jumping kick at the old man, and grazes him. The old man tells him that Ken is being held by Bison, while Chun-Li was taken by Gill.
Ryu finds his way to the location where Bison is holding Ken, and is met by Charlie and Guile, both looking for Bison as well. They are greeted by Bison and Ken, who is under mind control. Charlie and Guile fight with Bison while Ken attacks Ryu. Bison is toying with Guile and Charlie, as they both are not able to touch him. Guile unleashes a massive Sonic Boom that cuts a building behind Bison in half, and destroys part of Bison's cloak. Bison then uses his powers to send Guile flying over the side of a cliff. Charlie turns to watch Guile for a second, and meets the same fate.
Meanwhile, Ryu is not fighting back against Ken, and is instead talking to his old friend, trying to reason with him. He is finally able to break through the mind control, demanding that Ken say his name. Ken does, and is attacked by Bison. With Ken out of the way, Ryu attacks Bison, who is much more powerful this time around. Ryu begins to be dominated, while Ken regains consciousness in the woods. He gets to his feet, and remembers the words of his teacher. Doing this, he focuses his power, and heals his injured legs. Ryu is on the verge of defeat, when Ken returns, and gets some space between Ryu and Bison.
The two team up and take on Bison, who is so enraged that he fights them without his Psycho Power. Both Ken and Ryu are having trouble against Bison, until he uses his Knee Press Nightmare. ken lands on his back, while Ryu rolls through, and hits Bison with a series of ten unanswered attacks, toppling the tyrant. Bison recovers, and knocks Ryu to the ground, commenting on how he underestimated Ryu.
Ken attacks, and Bison begins to back up. Ryu grabs hold of Bison's leg, keeping him from moving using his teleportation, and avoiding the attacks. He tells Ken to " Do it NOW!!! ", which Bison does not understand. Ken unleashes his Tatsumaki Senpu Kyaku, knocking Bison off balance. Ryu follows this with a Shoryu Ken, which knocks Bison completely off balance. Ken suggests that they finish this, and charges up his Hadou-Ken, as Ryu does the same. Bison lands somewhat off the ground, his eyes widened as he sees what awaits him. Ken and Ryu both call out the name of their attack, and unleash a powerful Hadou-Ken. The duel Hadou-Kens combine into one mighty attack, which hits Bison dead on, sending him flying into his transport jet, which explodes.
Ken gives Ryu a thumbs up, but Ryu heads over to the cliff, looking for any sign of Charlie and Guile. Both he and Ken turn to look past the burning jet, and see a young man that is well built, caring Charlie under his left arm, and Guile over his right shoulder. The man walks back to town with Ryu and ken, introducing himself as Alex. They are greeted by members of the US Army, who take Guile and Charlie. Alex starts off, while Ken asks Ryu what he is going to do next. Ryu tells him he is heading to find Chun-Li, and that she is being held by a man named Gill. Alex stops at the mention of this name, and asks to go with them.
The three travel to Europe, where they run into Poison again. Ken attacks her, remembering her from the military base. Ryu deflects Ken's Hadou-Ken with one of his own, two which Poison is very grateful. Ryu explains that Poison works for the military, and is an undercover agent. Ken is still wary, but asks what she is doing in Europe. Poison explains that Bison is still alive, and that she plans to get access to more information by using them to damage Gill's cult. None of them like the idea, but they go along with it, realizing that there is no choice if Poison is to remain safe within Shadowloo.
They soon find their way to where Chun-Li is being held, and fight their way into the base. Ryu is nearly knocked out by a massive man named Hugo. Alex stays behind to deal with Hugo, making mention of some bad blood. Ryu, Ken, and Poison continue on without him. Poison splits off before they reach the main room, heading to collect some data. Ryu and ken make it to the main chamber, where they come across Gill. He walks away, leaving them to deal with Urien and Shadow Lady, who is Chun-Li under a horrible form of mind control.
Ken takes on Urien while Ryu tries to awaken Chun-Li like he was able to do with Ken. Because of this, Ryu receives a vicious beating. Ken is not fairing much better against Urien, and is being beaten badly. He calls out to Ryu for help, but Ryu is too busy dealing with Chun-Li. Chun-Li throws a Kiko Sho at Ryu, who decides to take it head on. At the last moment, it moves to the side slightly, only causing medium damage to Ryu's left arm. Ryu and Ken both realize they will be dead before they fully awaken Chun-Li, but Ryu does not give up. As Chun-Li attempts another Kiko Sho, Poison grabs her from behind in a full nelson, telling Ryu to help Ken.
With Ryu and Ken both fighting against Urien, the match is now very much even. They try the tactic that beat Bison, but Urien is too strong for their plain Hadou-Kens to beat him, as he mockingly tells them. Ken smirks, and he and Ryu both charge up their Shinkuu Hadou-Kens. Urien realizes the seriousness of this, but is unable to avoid the duel assault, and is beaten. Ryu turns to see how Poison is doing, and finds her unconscious, bleeding from the mouth, with Chun-Li about to finish her.
Ryu moves swiftly, firing a Pure Hadou-Ken at Chun-Li. This wipes out the effects of the mind control, and she passes out. Ryu catches her before she hits the ground, and Ken picks up Poison. Both men carry the women out of the area, and find Alex near where they left him, wounded, but alive. Hugo is unconscious. They make their way back into the city, and are surprised to find not only Charlie, but also a strange woman with purple hair.
Charlie introduces her as Rose, and she proceeds to heal Chun-Li's mind, as well as Poison's sever injuries, and Alex's wounds. Chun-Li sits up swiftly, and looks around, asking where Ryu went. Everyone looks around, and Ken realizes that Ryu slipped away. He makes mention that Ryu has trouble expressing his emotions, to which all look at him blankly, except Rose. She completes Ken's thought by saying Ryu must be in love with Chun-Li.
Ryu returns to Gouken's dojo, and reflects on all that has happened. He is once more greeted by the old man, who makes mention of his name as Oro. He tells Ryu that there are great forces of evil gathering, and wonders out loud what Ryu will do with his power. Ryu wonders the same thing, but already knows in his heart what he will do. He sets off to locate Shadowlaw, and bring it down.
Notes: Ryu can succumb to Satsui no Hadou, turning him into a being known as Evil Ryu. His appearance depicts Ryu's struggle to resist the urge. Evil Ryu has more powerful attacks than the original, strikes faster and possesses some of the attacks of Akuma, most notably the Shun Goku Satsu. Evil Ryu was the one that executed a Metsu Shoryuken, scarring Sagat's chest and his pride. Evil Ryu has darker skin, hair, and a black gi. His eyes are blood red, and he is pretty much the exact opposite of Ryu.
Also, he has trouble fighting against the Dolls, as they do not have free minds. This causes him to feel guilty about causing them harm.
